Dr. Bill Hughes, President of the Ontario Association of Cardiologists, shares his thoughts regarding the pending health care crisis in Ontario. Ontario cardiologists are asking the McGuinty Government to rescind the new fee structure, particularly self-referral fees for non-invasive cardiac testing. Without this change, the government will set back cardiac care in Ontario by 20 years, and there will be an immediate increase in death and disability.

College of Physicians and Surgeons probes conduct of cardiologist Dr. Bill
Hughes …. A 10-day hearing, starting towards the end of this coming
March, will determine if Dr. Hughes committed an act of professional
misconduct or is incompetent. According to the hearing notice, Dr. Hughes
is accused of failing to maintain a standard of practice of the profession
and has engaged in conduct or an act or omission relevant to the practice
of medicine that would reasonably be regarded by members as disgraceful,
dishonourable or unprofessional, including his referrals of patients for
    diagnostic testing.

  2. My daughter died under the so called DR. HUGHES care because of a mistake
he made in 2012. She was only 35 years old. He told her she had asthma
and instead she had an aorta valve problem from birth and he should have
seen it from test he done. He is in a profession that mistakes like that
cant happen. He should retire with all his money that he has made. I
wouldn’t advise anyone to go to him for treatment.

    1. +Neil Smith *Mr. Smith, first please accept me deepest condolences to you
and you family for this very unfortunate tragedy. Your also right though,
mistakes like this should never happen, ever.
On the other hand they do, although rare by all cardiologists. I have read
many a horror story in recent years with the new technologies available to
them. Dr. Hugh’s save my mothers life though and gave her am extra 32 years
of life. She has passed on now at the age of death at 96.
After this, some years later I had the unfortunate same cardiac problem my
mother did, I found out during an angiogram that on to of this my aorta had
a defect as well and they advise me it was ‘from birth’. However, they did
look further before they made the conclusion that this wasn’t an immediate
threat. I can only wish they did that for your 35 year old daughter.
They inserted angioplasty & 2 coronary stents via radial (wrist) and it was
very in-evasive, only over night treatment done at Toronto General as
      ordered by Dr. Hughes.
The horror (some) stories I heard were that some cardiologists actually
‘ripped arteries’ with this procedure and then it did become invasive, very
quickly. Most survived and yes, there were a couple of reported deaths.
Also Mr. Smith you are very correct in your thinking, Dr. Hughes does make
a large amount of money. Given this though, I’m not sure if your aware that
despite this and all of the cut backs were are experiencing for hospitals
across the country Fr. Hughes, in spite of all of this has out very much of
his own money into his new clinic on Charlotte Street.
As a Paralegal and Activist I have protested the cutbacks, the failed
Peterborough Regional Heath Center etc. Most of all, places like i.e.
Methadone Clinics that alone utilize approximately 45-50 physicians here in
Peterborough alone who are here just to make a quick-buck, some to upper 6
figures and even 7 for a few. These clinics serve No Purpose at all. They
have killed more people that cars & cigarettes (conservative figure)
combined! What they supply has absolutely no value to it’s patients or the
community by large . I’m telling you this as when myself, and others keep
pursuing the closures of these clinics and bad doctors, we will hopefully
have the amount of physicians where procedures can be done more thoroughly
and even 2 or 3 times as in your daughters case.
Mr. Smith, I usually only do these comments etc. over the phone or in
      person.
I can’t even imagine the grief you and your family are going through. My
daughter is very close to your daughters age (33) at the time of your
daughters passing and hope and pray, nothing ever happens to her. I just
again, cannot imagine life without her. I can only hope that in the future
we are funded and these kind of errors and I, and other like us will
hopefully prevent this, very sooner than later. I promise, I will never
      stop fighting this!
My deepest sympathies again Mr. Smith,
      Respectfully Yours,

  3. What he is protesting against in this video is exactly what the government
    was trying to stop.
