  6. One widely held popular
    theory singles out
    homogenization as a
    cause of the current
    epidemic of heart disease.
    The hypothesis was
    developed by Kurt A.
    Oster, MD and studied
    from the early 1960s until
    the mid 1980s. In studying
    and comparing the
    structure and biochemistry
    of healthy and diseased
    arterial tissue, Oster
    investigated plasmalogen,
    an essential fatty
    component of many cell
    membranes in widely
    scattered tissues
    throughout the human
body. Plasmalogen makes up a substantial part of the membranes surrounding
    heart muscle cells
and the cells that make up the walls of arteries. It is also present in the
    myelin sheath surrounding
nerve fibers and in a few other tissues. But it is not found in other parts
    of the human anatomy.
Oster discovered that heart and artery tissue that should contain
    plasmalogen often contained none.
It is well known that atherosclerosis begins with a small wound or lesion
in the wall of the artery.
Oster reasoned that the initial lesion was caused by the loss of
plasmalogen from the cells lining the
artery, leading to the development of plaque.
The big question was what caused the lack of plasmalogen in the heart
    muscle and the tissue lining
the arteries. Oster believed that the enzyme xanthine oxidase (XO) has the
    capacity to oxidize, or
change, plasmalogen into a different substance, making it appear that the
    plasmalogen had
disappeared. The body makes XO, but XO and plasmalogen are not normally
    found in the same
tissue; the heart, therefore, normally contains plasmalogen but not XO. In
    a paper published in 1974,
Oster argued that the presence of XO in the liver and in the mucous
    membrane of the small intestine
was directly responsible for the natural absence of plasmalogen from the
    cell membranes at these
sites.1 If XO somehow made its way to the heart and its arteries, that
    might explain the absence of
plasmalogen in the surgical specimens and autopsy tissues from pathological
What was the source of the XO found in the autopsy tissues? Normal human
    serum (the fluid part of
the blood) does not contain XO. Oster and his partner Ross considered two
    possible sources. One
was liver cells; patients with acute liver disease showed increased serum
    levels of xanthine oxidase,
and those with chronic liver disease occasionally showed moderate
    elevations. Another potential
source was cow’s milk, “…presently under investigation in this laboratory
    since it has been shown
that milk antibodies are significantly elevated in the blood of male
    patients with heart disease.”2
Cow’s milk is the most widely consumed food containing high levels of XO.
    Thorough cooking
destroys XO, but pasteurization destroys only about half of the XO in milk.
    Knowing this, Oster now
looked for a link between XO in milk and the loss of plasmalogen in
    arteries and heart muscle tissue.
He knew that people have drunk milk for upwards of 10,000 years, and that
    milk and milk products
were central in the dietaries of many cultures. But the epidemic of
    atherosclerosis was recent. These
facts argue against traditional milk and milk products being the culprit.
    But the homogenization of
milk became widespread in America in the 1930s and nearly universal in the
    1940s—the same
decades during which the incidence of atherosclerotic heart disease began
    to climb. Oster theorized
that the homogenization of milk somehow increased the biological
    availability of xanthine oxidase.
According to Oster, XO that remains in pasteurized, unhomogenized milk is
    found on the exterior of
the membrane of the milk fat globules, where it is broken down during
digestion. XO in raw milk is
similarly digested. Oster postulated that because homogenization reduces
    the fat globules to a
fraction of their original size, the XO is encapsulated by the new outer
    membranes of the smaller fat
globules which form during the homogenization process. He believed that
    this new membrane
protected the XO from digestive enzymes, allowing some XO to pass intact
    within the fat globules
from the gut into the circulatory system when homogenized milk is
    consumed.3 He referred to these
fat globules as liposomes and argued that the liposomes carrying XO were
    absorbed intact. After
entering the circulation, they travel to the capillaries, where the
    lipoprotein membranes appear to be
digested by the enzyme lipoprotein lipase, thus freeing the XO for
    absorption into the body, including
the heart and artery tissues, where it may interact with and destroy
In essence, Oster’s theory replaces cholesterol as the cause of heart
    disease with another
    mechanism, summarized as follows:
Homogenization causes a supposedly “noxious” enzyme called xanthine oxidase
    to be encapsulated
in a liposome that can be absorbed intact.
XO is released by enzymatic action and ends up in heart and arterial tissue
    where it causes the
destruction of a specialized protective membrane lipid called plasmalogen,
    causing lesions in the
arteries and resulting in the development of plaque.
Neither the opponents nor the proponents of the xanthine
    oxidase/plasmalogen hypothesis have
presented convincing evidence in all of their writings. However, the more
    scientific reviews
questioned the validity of Oster’s hypothesis, and pointed to some of the
    inconsistent findings.
A fundamental flaw in Oster’s theory involves the difference between a fat
    globule and a liposome.
Fat globules basically contain triglycerides and cholesterol encapsulated
    in a lipid bilayer membrane
composed of proteins, cholesterol, phospholipids and fatty acids. They
occur naturally in milk in a
wide range of sizes. The fat globules in unhomogenized bovine milk are both
    very small and very
large, ranging in size from 1000 nanometers to 10,000 nanometers. After
    homogenization, the
average globule size is about 500 nanometers with a range from 200
    nanometers to 2000
Oster considered homogenization of cow’s milk to be a “procedure which
    foists unnaturally small
particles on our digestive tracts.”4 Yet sheep’s milk fat globules are
reported to be “very small. . .
[and consequently]. . . easier to digest” and in fact globules from this
    milk are described as “naturally
homogenized.”5 The milk fat globule membrane from sheep’s milk does not
    separate and butter
cannot be made from such milk even though there is twice as much fat in
    sheep’s milk as in cow’s
milk. The fat globules from goat’s milk are similarly small. Once again,
    goat’s milk is considered
easier to digest than cow’s milk for this reason. So there is nothing
    unnatural about small milk fat
Fat globules of all sizes are broken down during digestion, releasing the
    hundreds of thousands of
triglycerides as well as any enzymes they contain. (Milk fat globules
    actually contain more than
seven enzymes, of which XO is one. The other major ones are NADH2,
    5-nucleotidase, alkaline phosphatase, phosphodiesterase and
These enzymes are broken down into individual amino acids (enzymes are
    specialized proteins) and
the triglycerides are broken down into individual fatty acids and
Although Oster described these small milk fat globules in homogenized milk
    as liposomes, several
researchers have pointed out that liposomes are very different in basic
    composition. Liposomes are
typically 200 nanometers or less in size and do not contain complex protein
    components. Liposomes
do not occur in nature but were developed by scientists as a way of
    delivering components such as
drugs to the cells in the body. They are composed of a phospholipid layer
    in which the phosphorus
moiety is on the outside and the lipid moiety is on the inside. The layer
    encapsulates a watery liquid,
not fatty acids. A liposome is not broken down during digestion. For this
    reason, scientists have
looked at liposomes as a way of delivering compounds taken orally to the
cells. In fact, a 1980 study
led by Oster’s colleague D. J. Ross reported that liposome-entrapped
    insulin effected blood sugarlowering
in diabetic rats.6 Ross claimed that this proved that large molecules could
    be absorbed.

    Heart Failure – Nutrition
This guide provides basic information to help you start or continue
following your heart failure diet. Planning what you eat
and balancing your meals are important ways to manage your health. Eating
healthy often means making changes in your
current eating habits. A registered dietitian can provide in-depth
personalized nutrition education, tailor these general
guidelines to meet your needs, and help you implement a personal action
Here are some basic guidelines that will help you get started. These
guidelines are explained in more detail inside this
Control the sodium in your diet. Decreasing the total amount of sodium you
consume to 2,000 mg (2 g) per day
is one of the most important ways to manage heart failure.
Learn to read food labels. Use the label information on food packages to
help you to make the best low-sodium
Eat a variety of foods to get all the nutrients you need.
As advised by your health care provider, eat foods that are high in
    potassium such as:
Dried fruits (such as prunes, dates and raisins)
    Nuts and whole grains
Oranges, other citrus fruits and citrus juices
Your potassium levels may drop if you are taking diuretics. Learn the signs
of low potassium, such as fatigue,
weakness, severe thirst, excessive urination, and heart beat changes. Call
your doctor if you notice these signs.
Include high-fiber foods such as vegetables, cooked dried peas and beans
    (legumes), whole-grain foods, bran,
cereals, pasta, rice and fresh fruit. Fiber is the indigestible part of
plant food that helps move food along the digestive
tract, better controls blood glucose levels and may reduce the level of
cholesterol in the blood. Foods high in fiber
include natural antioxidants, which are critical to vascular health. The
goal for everyone is to consume 25 to 35
    grams of fiber per day.
Carefully follow your fluid management guidelines. Reduce your fluid intake
if you have become more short
of breath or notice swelling. General rule: limit fluids to 8 1/4 cups or
less per day (which is equal to 2 liters or less
    OR 66 ounces or less).
Maintain a healthy body weight. This includes losing weight if you are
    overweight. Limit your daily total
calories, follow a low-fat diet and exercise regularly to achieve or
    maintain your ideal body weight.

  8. Fenugreek lowers blood sugar and cholesterol
    by Michelle Marks, staff writer
(NaturalHealth365) The spice fenugreek, may not be a common ingredient but
compelling research reveals that if used regularly it protects your heart,
    liver and
pancreas. Fenugreek is commonly used for a number of reasons including –
repair, better metabolism and gynecological health.
The natural compounds in fenugreek and its medicinal value have been used in
Ayurveda to treat a variety of conditions. Past and ongoing research reveal
    its ability to
maintain healthy blood parameters. Fenugreek is a resourceful ingredient
    and a fantastic alternative to
help manage high blood sugar and cholesterol. Best of all, it appears to be
free of nasty side effects –
unlike its counterpart found within the pharmaceutical industry.
How can spices help to defeat diabetes?
Fenugreek seeds contain an abundant amount of aminoacid 4-hydroxy
    isoleucine. According to research,
aminoacid exerts a protective effect on the liver and stimulates the
production of insulin. A 2009 study
showed that 4-hydroxy isoleucine improved the blood sugar levels and
insulin action in diabetic rats –
demonstrating a significant liver protect factor.
A human clinical study on patients with newly diagnosed type-2 diabetes
    showed positive results using
fenugreek. The patients were randomly grouped into two, one group received
    an extract of fenugreek (1
gram per day) and the other group received a placebo. Both the groups were
    given the regular diabetes
    care – diet and exercise.
After two months, the fenugreek supplemented group showed better blood
    sugar control and insulin
sensitivity compared to the other. Researchers also observed a significant
    reduction in the serum
triglyceride levels and increase in the good cholesterol levels.
The glucose-lowering effect of fenugreek seeds is largely due to the
    presence of soluble fiber.
According to a 2007 study, the soluble fiber fraction delayed carbohydrate
    digestion and absorption, while
increasing the action of insulin. These studies indicate that regular
    fenugreek consumption can be
    beneficial during diabetes therapy.
How does fenugreek lower cholesterol – without
    side effects?
Many studies have underscored fenugreek’s cholesterol-lowering effect – as
it is a great source of soluble
(21.7%) and insoluble fiber ( 26.8%). Researchers say that the high fiber
    content actually blocks
cholesterol absorption. The presence of soluble fiber, in particular,
increases the viscosity of the digested
food and inhibits the uptake of cholesterol and bile acids.
Another strong reason behind fenugreek’s cholesterol-lowering effect is the
fact the fiber acts as a food
for the beneficial gut bacteria (pre-biotic). The volatile fatty acids
released by these gut bacteria enter the
bloodstream and suppress the cholesterol production by the liver. Based on
    previous studies, researchers
suggest a total quantity of 20 – 25g per day – in three divided doses which
    yield maximum benefit in
    terms of cholesterol control.
The best ways to add fenugreek to my diet
Fenugreek seeds are naturally high in minerals like, calcium, potassium,
    selenium, manganese,
magnesium, iron and zinc. It is a good source of B vitamins, vitamin A and
In addition, these tiny seeds also contain polysaccharides – saponins,
    tannins, pectins, hemicellulose, and
mucilage that account for their soluble and insoluble fiber content.
    Fenugreek also contains choline –
which helps to protect the nerves in your brain and slow down premature
    mental decline..
Fenugreek is safe to consume on a daily basis and can be incorporated into
    many recipes as a spice
(seeds), herb (dried or fresh leaves) or a vegetable (sprouts/microgreens).
The tender leaves can be added
to salad – to boost the mineral intake.
You may also like to lightly toast the seeds or make a powder for
marinades, soups, and sauces. The most
popular use of the powder form is in curry recipes for a special flavor.
    Powdered fenugreek can also be
used in pancake mixes, lentil (dal) and rice recipes.
Keep in mind, fenugreek seeds have a strong bitter taste – so be careful on
    quantity. To remove the
bitterness – you may want to soak the seeds overnight. On the other hand,
    fenugreek leaves are less bitter
and can be used in large quantities and work well in dishes like, lentil

  9. Benefits of Moringa: Moringa for Heart Health

February is the month of hearts. From sharing our love with
friends and family around Valentine’s Day, to spreading awareness about
heart health for National Heart Health Month, we’re focusing on making
ourselves and our loved ones the healthiest and happiest we can be.
Heart health encompasses many aspects of our lives. Because our
circulatory system connects every organ, tissue and cell in our bodies,
many factors play a role in keeping hearts healthy and beating happily.
These factors include: good nutrition for a properly functioning heart
and healthy blood, physical activity to supply oxygen to blood, smart
    lifestyle choices and stress management.
Excellent nutrition is essential to good heart health. Our hearts
work hard every day to pump blood throughout our bodies so we have to do
our part in helping our hearts along. Namely, we have to fuel our hearts
with only the best nutrients to keep it going for many years to come. Many
studies have shown that the best nutrients for hearts include:
Omega-3 Fatty Acids that supply EPA and DHA, which
can prevent blood clots, keep blood pressure in check, reduce
inflammation and manage cholesterol levels. The top food choice for
omega-3 fatty acids is fish, such as salmon or tuna.
B Vitamins aid in keeping red blood cells and nerves
healthy. It may also lower homocysteine, a non-protein amino acid in
the blood that is linked to heart attacks, blood clots and strokes. B
Vitamins are commonly found in bran, pistachios and hazelnuts, certain
types of seeds, fish and spices, including garlic.
Magnesium helps hearts beat regularly and is often
used to treat heart arrhythmia. Magnesium, found in walnuts, is also
vital to all of our other organs as well.
    Fiber, especially from whole grains,
is a great asset for cardiovascular health and has been associated with
lowering the risk of heart disease. Fiber can also reduce harmful LDL
cholesterol levels. Breads, rice, wheat and grain products are all
excellent sources of fiber. Fiber also helps the body feel satiated,
which may help to reduce one’s overall caloric intake.
Quercetin is an anti-oxidant that helps prevent
blood from clotting. It is naturally found in apples and can help to
lower the risk of heart disease.
We have some good news: Moringa contains each of these heart-boosting
nutrients! It’s important to eat lean proteins, lots of fruits and
vegetables and whole grains to reap the benefits for your heart, but
Moringa can ensure you are on a heart-healthy path each and every day.

The Clinical Council on Cardiology says that after a heart-healthy
diet, daily exercise is a key factor in maintaining heart health.
Exercise increases the heart rate and gets oxygen flowing through the
blood, invigorating the body. Studies have also proven that high
intensity exercise can reduce LDL cholesterol. Additionally, exercise
helps with weight management and maintaining a healthy body mass index, a
strong indicator for avoiding cardiovascular disease. Moringa also aids
in both exercise and weight management by providing the body with the
energy it needs for physical activity, helping to repair broken down
muscle tissues, and supplying excellent nutrition to help you feel
satiated while revving up your metabolism.
Lastly, lifestyle choices and stress can impact heart health. Smoking
is a major cause of heart disease-related heart attacks and strokes.
Stress creates a chemical reaction in the body that can increase blood
pressure and have a host of other negative physical and emotional
consequences. When stress takes hold of our lives, we are more likely to
overeat or make poor nutritional choices and be depressed and
lethargic. Making positive lifestyle choices that improve our heart
health, like not smoking and managing stress, can go a long way in
keeping the beats healthy and happy.

  10. Moringa Oleifera – Good for Your HeartA
growing body of scientific research indicates that what we eat and
drink can protect our body against a slew of health afflictions. Studies
show that nearly 70% of heart disease cases are preventable when we
make the right food choices. One “right” food choice is the Moringa tree
    (Moringa Oleifera).Nutritionists
as well as health and fitness experts the world over are now touting
the Moringa tree as being the perfect food for our body. A popular
daytime TV doctor even calls it “The Miracle Tree.”What’s good
for your heart is good for your brain and good for you in general,” says
Arthur Agatston, MD, a renowned cardiologist and founder of the South
    Beach Diet.Moringa BenefitsDiscovered in
the southern foothills of the Himalayas in northwestern India, the
Moringa Oleifera tree is gaining worldwide acclaim for its remarkable
nutritional and medicinal benefits. In fact, the leaves of the Moringa
tree have no equal in the plant kingdom. It is recognized by most
experts as the most nutritious food in the world, with most of its
benefits stored in the small green leaves of this unpretentious plant.Known
in many cultures as the “Tree of Life,” it contains more than 90
nutrients, including 46 powerful antioxidants and 18 amino acids. In
fact, practically every part of the plant contains important minerals
and are a good source of protein, vitamins, beta-carotene, flavonoids,
and various phenolics. In gram for gram comparisons to common fruits and
vegetables, Moringa leaves contain:7 times the vitamin C in oranges4 times
the calcium in milk and twice the protein4 times the vitamin A in carrots3
times the iron found in almondsAnd 3 times the potassium in bananasHeart
    Healthy AntioxidantsBecause
of the significant volume and variety of antioxidants, Moringa is
excellent for heart health. Antioxidants help keep your blood vessels
strong and elastic. An easy way to tell if they’re doing their job
is to measure the amount of homocysteine in your blood. Homocysteine is
an amino acid caused by oxidation in the body. Normal levels of it are
fairly harmless. But if your body doesn’t get enough antioxidants or
your antioxidant systems are overwhelmed, homocysteine levels rise.Too
much homocysteine in your blood can deteriorate your artery walls
leading to plaque buildup and inflammation. It can also make it
difficult for your blood vessels to dilate, thus blocking blood flow to
the heart. One way to clean out excess homocysteine is with antioxidants and
    B vitamins – and Moringa has both.Dr.
Levette Truette, writing for the University of Florida News, says,
“Almost all diseases can be prevented or destroyed if given enough
antioxidants. In fact, Moringa has every single essential nutrient
required for humans . . . and also contains every essential and
non-essential amino acid that humans require.”According to an August 2004
article in the Journal of the American Medical Association,
antioxidants, like vitamin E for instance, one of many antioxidants in
Moringa leaves, slows the progression of atherosclerosis, or hardening
of the arteries. Also, one of the amino acids contained in Moringa is a
key factor in preventing cardiovascular diseaseMoringa Squelches
HypertensionOne of the most common cardiovascular diseases is high blood
pressure or what’s also referred to as hypertension.
To say it’s “common” is fairly accurate because more people see their
doctor for high blood pressure than for any other reason.High
blood pressure is dangerous because it makes the heart work harder to
pump blood to the body. As the pressure builds inside our arteries,
veins, and capillaries, our heart becomes even more overworked. Over
time, our heart grows larger in an effort to compensate for the extra
workload and eventually becomes weaker.High blood pressure also
damages the endothelium, the thin lining inside our artery walls,
hurting the body’s ability to produce nitric oxide (NO). NO is necessary
to lower blood pressure because it relaxes the blood vessels and
increases blood flow.A key amino acid found in Moringa is
L-Arginine. It is a precursor for the production of NO. When the body
produces healthy levels of NO, you remain heart healthy. With its
supply of L-Arginine, Moringa leaves help the body in its vital
production of NO. Meanwhile, the antioxidants contained in the leaves
help protect and stabilize the nitric oxide, thereby further enhancing
the levels of nitric oxide.Moringa Supplements Abound As Awareness
early 2012, the popularity of Moringa in the U.S. exploded when a
popular medical doctor began promoting Moringa nutritional supplements
on his daytime TV program as an “energy blaster” and a great way to
“jump start your day.” Because of this plant’s remarkable antioxidant,
    anti-inflammatory, anti-aging and energy-enhancing qualities, this
physician recommends taking Moringa Oleifera capsules daily. With
more people clamoring for Moringa to take advantage of its staggering
array of nutritional and medicinal benefits, many nutritional supplement
companies have jumped on the bandwagon to meet the rapidly growing
demand. Moringa supplements now proliferate across the U.S. market. There’s
a bit of a problem with this picture, however. Not
all Moringa supplements are made from FRESH leaves . . . nor do they
come from trees grown in the rich Himalayan soil of northwestern India.
Scientific analysis shows that only trees from this region contain the
highest nutritional potency. And not are all Moringa supplements are
made to the highest standards . . . nor provide the highest level of
    effectiveness possible.

  11. Improve Heart Health
Kalonji seeds and Kalonji seed oil is considered one of the best home
remedies for heart and its healthy functioning. One of the easy Kalonji
seeds recipes for improving heart health is mixing it with goat milk.

Add 1/2 teaspoon of the oil in a cup of
fresh goat milk and have it 2 times a day for 10 days, after 10 days
have it once a day. Refrain from all fatty and oily food items during
    this treatment.

  12. Flaxseed and cardiovascular health.Flaxseed and its components may improve
    cardiovascular health because of
their numerous attributes. Flaxseed contains 35% of its mass as oil, of
which 55% is alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Flax meal, which is devoid of
oil, contains the lignan secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG).
Flaxseed, flaxseed with very low ALA, flaxseed oil, flax lignan complex
(FLC), and SDG reduce the development of hypercholesterolemic
    atherosclerosis by 46%, 69%, 0%, 73%, and 34%, respectively, in the
rabbit model. FLC and SDG slow the progression of atherosclerosis but
have no effect in regression of atherosclerosis. Suppression of
atherosclerosis by flaxseed is the result of its lignan content and not
the result of ALA content. Suppression of atherosclerosis is associated
with lowering of serum lipids and antioxidant activity. Effects of
flaxseed on serum lipids in experimental animals are variable from no
change to slight reduction. Flaxseed oil does not affect serum lipids,
except for a slight reduction in serum triglycerides. Lignan in general
reduces serum total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol
and raises serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. SDG and its
metabolites have antioxidant activity. Flaxseed and flaxseed oil do not
have antioxidant activity except they suppress oxygen radical production
by white blood cells. Flaxseed oil/ALA has variable effects on
    inflammatory mediators/markers (interleukin [IL]-1beta, IL-2, IL-4,
    IL-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interferon-gamma, C-reactive
protein, and serum amyloid A). Doses of ALA less than 14 g/d do not
affect inflammatory mediators/markers, but 14 g/d or greater reduce
inflammatory mediators/markers. Flaxseed oil decreases soluble vascular
cell adhesion molecule-1 but has no effect on soluble intracellular
    adhesion molecule-1, soluble E-selectin, and monocyte colony-stimulating
factor. Flaxseed has variable effects on IL-6, high-sensitivity
C-reactive protein, and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1. FLC
reduces plasma levels of C-reactive protein but has no effects on IL-6,
tumor necrosis factor-alpha, soluble intracellular adhesion molecule-1,
soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, or monocyte chemoattractant
protein. Flaxseed has a very small hypotensive effect, but flaxseed oil
does not lower blood pressure. However, SDG is a very potent hypotensive
agent. Flaxseed oil decreases platelet aggregation and increases
platelet activating inhibitor-1 and bleeding time. Flaxseed and FLC have
no effect on the hemopoietic system. SDG is a potent angiogenic and
antiapoptotic agent that may have a role in cardioprotection in ischemic
heart disease. In conclusion, flaxseed, FLC, and SDG, but not flaxseed
oil, suppress atherosclerosis, and FLC and SDG slow progression of
atherosclerosis but have no effect on regression. Flaxseed oil
suppresses oxygen radical production by white blood cells, prolongs
bleeding time, and in higher doses suppresses serum levels of
inflammatory mediators and does not lower serum lipids.
